NCSU RISF Grant Awarded

By | May 6, 2014

The research group was awarded the NCSU Research and Innovation Seed Funding (RISF) for academic year 2014-2015. The RISF program is designed to assist NC State researchers in developing innovative interdisciplinary programs that have strong potential for significant future support from government agencies, corporations, industrial consortia or foundations.

The funded project is titled “The Impact of Landscape and Daylight on Microbial Communities in Childcare Facilities and Potential Protection Against Atopy”. A broad body of research has begun to suggest that in addition to negative effect of some pathogenic microbes on human health that there is also a positive effect of the biodiversity of microbes on human health. More different kinds of microbes in this model equates to better immune health. Yet, while a large body of work has begun to consider the links between microbial biodiversity and health, less is known about which factors influence microbial biodiversity. This study is to investigate how building design and landscape diversity impact indoor biodiversity of microbial communities in childcare facilities.
