Nikita Jathan is a Master of Environmental Studies (’15) student in the Center for Environmental Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. She is originally from Cary, North Carolina, and received her Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from VCU in 2014.

Through her study of the environment, Nikita found she was truly passionate about energy use in today’s world, and when discovering the large percentage of energy buildings consume, she turned her focus to buildings and their role in the future of the environment. She plans to pursue a Master of Architecture after completing graduate studies at VCU, focusing on sustainable design.

Nikita spent time in the BETLab at NC State University working on research aiming to help architects more effectively design roofs in early design stages. The resulting web tool will allow designers to optimize energy use and functionality of the roof. Her research interests involve renewable energy and energy efficiency in building systems, as well as holistically and environmentally conscious sustainable architecture.
